Army Body Fat Calculator

Determine your body fat percentage using the U.S. Army's official circumferential method.

Regulatory Insight

The "Tape Test" is the primary regulator for body composition across U.S. Army commands. Precision in measurement is key for accuracy.

What is the Army Body Fat Test?

The U.S. Army uses a specific calculation based on your height and various body circumferences to estimate body fat percentage. This ensures service members maintain a physical standard consistent with readiness and health requirements. While it's an estimation, it's the official regulatory standard for the military.

How to Measure Properly

For accuracy, measurements should be taken on bare skin. The tape should be snug but not compressing the skin. Men measure at the navel; women measure at the narrowest point of the waist and the widest point of the hips.

Regulatory Accuracy

This calculator implements the official U.S. Army circumferential equations used for administrative health and readiness decisions.

The Equations

Male: 86.010 × log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76

Women use a different formula that also includes hip circumference: 163.205 × log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 × log10(height) - 78.387. These units are calculated in inches internally.

Service Standards

Male Standard

A 20-year-old male soldier typically must maintain a body fat percentage of 20% or lower.

Female Standard

A 20-year-old female soldier typically must maintain a body fat percentage of 30% or lower.
